Canadiens Prospect Zharovsky Impresses In KHL Debut
The Montreal Canadiens opted to trade both their first-round picks at the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, resulting in Russian forward Alexander Zharovsky being the first young player added to the team’s prospect pipeline.
The Habs picked Zharovsky 34th overall (2nd round), banking on his impressive skill set, not to mention his raw talent.
It’s always difficult to get a read on players emerging from Russian, but scouts were quick to suggest the Canadiens had a potential draft steal on their hands once Zharovsky was off the board.
The 6’1 winger enjoyed a very successful season in the MHL prior to the draft, to the tune of 24 goals and 26 assists in 45 games, however, there were no guarantees he’d find his rhythm in the KHL. The MHL is the Russian equivalent to the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), connoting that a jump from the MHL to the KHL represents a significant uptick in the quality of competition.
Lo and behold, not only did Zharovsky avoid looking out of place in his first taste of regular-season KHL action, he also managed to score a goal and an assist in Salavat Yulaev’s 5-2 loss to Avangard.

His goal came on the heels of a very nice tic-tac-toe play, which featured Zharovsky heading to the net to give his teammate a prime passing option.

He followed it up with the type of assist that will lead to an abundance of coal being shovelled into the hype train.
It’s too early to start projecting Zharovsky’s NHL potential, but it must be said that he displayed strong offensive instincts, as well as elite hand-eye coordination to set up his team’s second goal of the game, especially when we consider he’s an 18-year-old player making his regular-season debut.
