The recent rule change in the NCAA will have an impact on some Montreal Canadiens prospects, including Owen Protz and Hayden Paupanekis. While the change is bound to attract a lot of talent to the American collegiate ranks, it should lead to more available ice time in the Canadian Hockey League. Prospect Filip Eriksson has hit the ground running in Sweden. He has scored two goals and two assists in three preseason games, on top of scoring goals in back-to-back Champions League matchups versus EV Zug and SC Bern.

As far as I can tell, the only time Lane Hutson isn’t busying practicing is when he’s busy coaching youth hockey.

Speaking of Hutson, you’ll be shocked to know he was practicing on this weekend.

ICYMI: By adding Noah Dobson to the mix, the Habs immediately improved their blue line by leaps and bounds. And now that Lane Hutson has a decent amount of NHL experience under his belt, the defensive situation seems much healthier than in the previous season. However, like most defensive squads, there’s still a lot of work to be done before we can consider it an area of strength for the Montreal Canadiens. Detroit Red Wings prospect Dmitri Buchelnikov is continuing his strong play for CSKA Moscow in the KHL preseason. The 21-year-old left-winger drew an assist on the second goal in CSKA’s 2-0 shutout of Spartak in the Moscow Mayor’s Cup tournament. [Detroit Red Wings]

The Maple Leafs drafted Mitch Marner fourth overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. He’s a skilled, cerebral playmaker fresh off a 102-point season. He should have gone down as one of the best homegrown talents to wear the Maple Leaf. Instead, his Toronto tenure ended with fans booing him off the ice. Marner spoke to TSN’s Mark Masters at Hockey Canada’s Olympic orientation camp on Thursday and opened up about his decision to leave Toronto. [Vegas Golden Knights]
