MONTREAL — There’s always Montreal Canadiens news to be absorbed on a daily basis, but there are only so many hours in a day. On Sundays, we recap the most exciting and relevant NHL news stories that you may have missed throughout the week so that you can stay in the Canadiens loop.

Monday

Logan Cooley is probably going to surpass Juraj Slafkovsky in points relatively soon, but the real prize from 2022 was not found in the first round. The mere fact that Hutson is on the heels of both Cooley and Slafkovsky with just one season in the bank as a defenceman is yet another testament to his ridiculously impressive rookie campaign.

Ivan Demidov and his girlfriend, Katyaa Yakovleva, are enjoying their summer, currently spending time in Manhattan, home of very mediocre bagels that are closer to being rolls with holes than a proper bagel you’ll find in Montreal. On the flip side, The Guggenheim is always worth a visit.

Montreal Canadiens prospect Aatos Koivu is in action, playing for Finland’s Under-20 team at tournament that includes two other countries, Switzerland and Czechia.

The Montreal Canadiens 2025 Prospect Rankings are underway, but before we get going with the honourable mentions, as well as the in-depth articles for every prospect in the top-20, we’ll examine the important players who are no longer eligible for the project, either due to their age, results, or a change in employers, including Lane Hutson and Logan Mailloux. It’s very easy to blame goalies for every mistake, but all things considered, the Habs are lucky to have a talented netminder like Samuel Montembeault in the mix. He worked his way up from the waiver wire to become a very good starter, among the best last season.

Wednesday

Even though we’re in the dog days of summer, several Montreal Canadiens players are keeping busy, including Nick Suzuki and Patrik Laine, who were busy practicing one-timers. Even though he missed a significant portion of the season, Laine scored more goals from his sweet spot than any other NHL player last season, and it’s fair to suggest the Habs would have missed the playoffs without his one-timer excellence on the powerplay.

As for Cole Caufield, he’s keeping busy with Dylan Larkin and Co., and for once, he wasn’t the shortest player on the ice!

It’s always fun to watch freshly drafted prospect L.J. Mooney in action, even if it’s during a 3v3 game of shinny.

Look, we can’t guarantee Ivan Demidov will score a bevy of great goals next year, but I wouldn’t bet against it.

Thursday

Former Hab Nathan Beaulieu has officially hung up his skates. The Strathroy native was picked 17th overall by the Canadiens in 2011, playing parts of five seasons with the team before being traded to the Buffalo Sabres for a third-round pick.

The start to the 2025-26 season is still several months away, but it seems like many Habs players are raring to go in mid-July, always an encouraging sign for a team on the rise. Juraj Slafkovsky was among the key Canadiens players practicing in Brossard on Wednesday. Former Hab Tyler Toffoli also joined-in on the fun.

Friday

You’ll have to wait until 10 am ET to see which Montreal Canadiens prospect nabbed the 20th spot in our yearly rankings, but in the meantime you should read up on the players who just missed the cut, including Owen Protz and Bryce Pickford. [Canadiens Prospect Rankings: The Honourable Mentions]

Newly drafted forward L.J. Mooney keeps finding ways to stay in the headlines, as evidenced by his game-winning breakaway goal versus Czechia on Wednesday.

Saturday

Slovak forward Filip Mesar was voted as the 20th best Montreal Canadiens prospect by the fans, a ranking that reflects his rather difficult season in the AHL. The good news is that the 2022 first-round pick is overflowing with talent, which means it’s too early to lose hope that he’ll one day be able to ascend to the NHL. There’s no doubt that  3v3 summer shinny lacks the intensity found in NHL games, but it’s always fun to watch top prospect Ivan Demidov at work. As a reminder, it took Demidov a handful of shifts in the NHL to register an assist, followed quickly by his first NHL goal.

Former NHLer Matt Martin discussed the recent Noah Dobson trade, which saw the first-pairing defenceman join the Habs in exchange for a pair of first-round picks and forward Emil Heineman.

Prospect Quentin Miller is definitely taking the path less travelled. He spent two years in the QMJHL with the Rimouski Oceanic and Quebec Remparts before heading to the BCHL to play for the Chilliwack Chiefs. He’s now set to play in the NCAA, joining fellow Canadiens prospect Sam Harris in Denver.
