Latest Canadiens Trade Rumours: Dobson And Kyrou

It’s officially the silly season, which means the Montreal Canadiens will be linked to several players as we navigate through the NHL Entry Draft into free agency on July 1.
The latest trade rumour has linked the Habs to a pair of high-end players, including New York Islanders defenceman Noah Dobson. From what I’ve heard, the odds that Dobson will be moved for a reasonable price are very low, but we do know the Islanders have been quietly gauging his value on the trade market.
Simply put, Dobson would check a lot of boxes for roughly half the teams in the NHL, therefore we can expect the return to be very high. He’s a right-handed, puck-moving defenceman who is just 25 years old. I’d also argue the Islanders would immediately need to start their search for a player to replace Dobson, because he’s the exact type of quality player you want in your lineup as you rebuild the franchise, making it a curious decision to say the least.
But we’re not here to question the Islanders. Rather, we’re here to entertain the possibility Dobson may join the fold at the perfect time during the team’s rebuild. If the Habs want to maintain their upward trajectory, they have to add talented players to the mix, and Dobson would be the ideal target.
The main sticking point is his contract, as the Islanders decided to only offer him a three-year deal (in all their wisdom), which means he’s scheduled for a significant and well-deserved raise this summer.
Clearly the Canadiens have shifted from trying to find a 2C to bolstering their lineup where at all possible.
They’ve kicked tires on Dobson before, and Kyrou has been linked to the Habs brass last summer but the Blues were unwilling to entertain a trade.

Other Montreal Canadiens Trade Target
While Dobson’s name has been circulating for a while, we haven’t heard much about a potential Jordan Kyrou trade during the regular season. HE doesn’t necessarily solve the lack of centre depth in the lineup, but you’d be hard-pressed to argue that he would not immediately improve the lineup.
At 27 years old, Kyrou is in his prime, coming off a great season in which he scored 36 goals and 34 assists in 82 games. Again, I wouldn’t expect the price to be reasonable, but such is life when you’re targeting good players in the trade market.
Kyrou has played just two years of his eight-year extension with the Blues, which carries an annual average value of $8.5 million, connoting the Habs would have to make some space should they want to add him within the constraints of their current salary cap situation.
As for what type of assets the Habs can offer, they have a pair of picks in the first-round of the upcoming draft, not to mention several decent prospects in Laval, including Logan Mailloux, a name that recently circulated in Habs-related trade discussions.
ON TOPIC: Canadiens Trade Talk – First Round Picks And Logan Mailloux
Both these guys would be great fits in the Habs lineup …but….at what price ??? Probably more than they can afford .. without compromising the current roster..!! We can only DREAM ..!!
I assume at least one of the first-round picks and one good prospect (Mailloux level) would have to be included if the Habs want to acquire Dobson, and then you’d probably have to add a little. Half the league should be interested in acquiring him, which will likely drive the price up.
BUT, full disclosure, I’m terrible at predicting trade value, and recent trades have not commanded huge returns.
If we are getting Dobson, Matheson needs to be traded to the isles or another team.
DO NOT give up the 1st rd. picks !
Usually I’d be quick to agree, but Dobson would absolutely improve the lineup by leaps and bounds, and that’s what the Habs need at the moment.
What kind of increase would Dobson expect after a season he dropped from 70 points to 39!
Last amongst regular defensemen on New York with 57 hits in 71 games which is not good.
Also his +/- is a -28 worse than last year.
Agreee. But Isles weren’t very good either. We need a defensively sound defencemen. I’d be checking in on Ekblad.
Would have to overpay to get him and sign him long term. Can’t see him on the ice w Hutson unless pp. let Mailloux and Reinbacher develop, that’s our rd. Our true window to win it all is still a couple years away
if they do get Dobson for the 17th oa plus mallioux and change, then They likely would trade mathison…at least by the end of the year. He is in his last contract year and won’t be space for him. Having Hutson, Reinbacher, Guhle, and Dobson would be a crazy good d core. Still need to address the center issue at some point. I think they should keep one of those 2 firsts this year to draft a forward. Its good to keep that pipeline going. At 16 oa they could probably get a Bear, Carbonneau, Nesbitt or Lakovic to marinate in the minors. Trade Liane, he doesn’t fit this teams model. Will probably have to trade Gallagher, Anderson and prices contract eventually, to free up cap. Some expensive contract renews coming up.
Dobson is an exceptional power play quarterback. If they acquired Dobson would Dobson and Hutson both be on the first power play unit or would Dobson be put on the second power play unit.
Maybe I am overrating Dobson. Lane Hutson had one goal and 20 assists on the power play whereas Dobson has one goal and 11 assists on the power play.
Considering we’re pretty good for wingers, I don’t think spending the assets we have for Kyrou would be prudent. Dobson is a maybe for me depending on the cost.
It’s been reported Dobson wants $10M+ on a long term deal. That will cause problems in “la metropole”, not only for the upcoming Hutson contract negotiations, but generally with the entire team contract structure. In addition, the Islanders will be asking for a monster return, and rightly so. Montreal needs to be extremely careful here, and not get swept up by the moment. The rebuild is progressing as it should. Mailloux and Reinbacher are developing, and will be ready to enter the lineup shortly. Habs management needs to be smart. Trying to be the smartest guy in the room is what led Habs to move on from Monahan and Kovacevic. Hmmm. A second line centre and a right hand top 4 D-man. I wonder if we could use those guys now. Teams are going to be tripping over themselves for Dobson, and Darche is going to fleece some GM. Let’s hope it isn’t Hughes.
If things get too expensive, they could just play the long game. Take the 2 best players they can get at 16 and 17, Preferably forwards or Centers and move on. Nothing wrong with that. Would probably be better for longer doing it that way.
Yeah, HuGo are still working on their 3-5-7 year plan. They will have contingencies that far down the road, ready to plug in prospects who develop well in Laval. With the cap rocketing up, some teams will overpay for UFA’s and trades but will likely be able to absorb those in a couple of years. This also means teams aren’t shedding bloated salaries like we have seen. If the Habs keep both picks it shouldn’t surprise us this year. But with the prospects in play, the Habs will have many sizeable salaries to cover in the coming years. And the expanded cap will manage that.
This year, if Armia and Dvo and Pezz are out, that’s an experience gap. Florian could take the place of Pezz, but is Beck ready to handle the Dvo role? Is Kapanen ready? Laine has to play a more complete role, so hopefully his knee is better. And Dach will also have to be solid and uninjured. It’s a show-me season for him.
Thus, the Habs will get younger, even with re-signing Armia (for example.) They may decided to bring Dvo back too, just as a further bridge.
On the D front, with Savard retired, there is still a wealth of talent. The trade for Carrier that worked so well did show the Habs need the experience. So, the whole draft process is still a toss-up! Snaring Caufield, Demidov and Hage were fortuitous picks, perhaps. I’m sure we’ll all be tuned in tonight for the first round, but also for who’s next.
If the team grabs two large, skilled players that need 2-3 years to marinate they can afford to do it. The days of rushing prospects into the line-up look to be over, mercifully. And HuGo don’t need to make a desperation swing for the fences, either. Solid, punishing depth will help carry the day in a couple of years and beyond.
So much for my planned short reply! GHG at the draft!!
Agree for the most part but you have to make the money work. Did not like the Monahan deal because you had a 2nd line center for cheap and a buffer against Dach. Have to convince a guy like that to stay. As for Kovacevic he is a minor leaguer because he isn’t strong or a good skater. As you said, don’t get too smart because that is when you will mess up. They should take a chance on Tavares (or Duchene) when the price is low. Bennett would be an overpay. Mactavish would be a good signing but Leafs might outbid for him.
Maybe the Habs need to sit this one out and not do any trades and see what happens. Maybe they need to lay low. A lot of the Habs’ prospects maybe on the cusp of finally breaking out and demonstrating how good they could be. If Hughes trades some of these young guys, it could come back to bite him on the rear end. If by not making any trades for the 2025/2026 seaaon and actually not making the playoffs, the Habs will at least get better draft pick positions in the 2026 draft.
