Habs Daily: Robertson Trade Rumours, Laval Rocket, Konyushkov

Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, stories, and content you may have missed on Tuesday.
Montreal Canadiens News
Jason Robertson’s name has popped up in trade rumours, a rarity since he’s among the elite in the NHL. Regardless of how serious Dallas is about moving the highly talented 25-year-old, any trade would have to involve a top prospect or two, as the Stars are unlikely to accept a trade that offers them the sum of the parts. The Charlotte Checkers completed their sweep of the Laval Rocket, a disappointing end to a fantastic regular season for Montreal’s AHL affiliate. We’ll discuss the individual performances in the near future, but suffice it to say the team was hoping for key contributions from key players, and that was not the case in the Eastern Conference Final.
Unfortunately, the series-clinching goal came late in the third period, with Zach Hayes and Jacob Fowler crossing their wires while trying to anticipate the puck’s trajectory on what can only be described as awful ice.
Disaster for the Laval Rocket in the dying minutes of the third period (must-win game).

Fellow Canadiens prospect Bogdan Konyushkov was happy to see Ivan Demidov make his way to Montreal. According to Konyushkov, they were shown Demidov’s first career goal at least five times in a row. He also expects Habs fans to fall (even more) in love with the 19-year-old forward as they get more opportunities to watch him play in the offensive zone. [RG]
Bogdan Konyushkov on Habs rookie Ivan Demidov in Montreal next season:
“I think he’ll become even more popular with the fans next season.”

With franchises planned for Seattle and Vancouver, the PWHL is set to hold an expansion draft. Teams can only protect three players, which means there will be a ton of talent available. Sarah Nurse and Hilary Knight are among the players who weren’t protected. The Montreal Victoire predictably protected Marie-Philip Poulin, Laura Stacey, and Ann-Renee Desbiens, leaving a pair of high-level defencemen available, Cayla Barnes and Erin Ambrose.
I go in depth in the piece about this, but the only disaster scenario for Montreal is losing Barnes and Ambrose. Teams will lose good players, no situation is ideal.
Montreal losing both D is an impossible hole to climb out of and still fix the other parts of the roster.

ICYMI: Nick Suzuki once again received Selke consideration from a few voters, connoting he continues to improve with surprising consistency. The Selke votes were in addition to finishing as the sixth-highest scoring centre in the NHL. [Suzuki Selke Votes Demonstrate Canadiens Captain Growth]

If Nick Kypreos’ Offseason Trade Board is anything to go off of, there will be plenty of trades in the coming weeks. Of the 20 players appearing on Kypreos’ list, two play for the Vegas Golden Knights. [Vegas Golden Knights]
Florida Panthers general manager Bill Zito has upended and rebuilt his team’s roster since taking over the team in 2020, but as his team goes to the Stanley Cup Final for a third straight year, he says he is trying to “stay out of the way.’’ [Florida Panthers]
Let’s face it, Jason Robertson is the type of player who would be highly coveted by most NHL teams, including the New York Islanders. [New York Islanders]
Konyushkov is an interesting player. He has handled impressive responsibilities as a young player, including being a captain in the KHL at an extremely young age (and then have it taken away a year later). The thing that concerns me is every article I read about him where he’s quoted, he takes a shot at the Habs for a lack of communication. I remember when he was interviewed about Demidov in the past, he mentioned that the Canadiens talk to Ivan every week, but that he doesn’t hear anything from them himself. Now, he slips a little dig in about not receiving a congratulations for winning the VHL championship. Are we dropping the ball with this guy by not following up on him? A basic congratulations for winning call from Bobrov isn’t much to ask. Or, is this guy going to be an issue in the dressing room based on what he says in the press? I think he has a valid point if we’re not keeping tabs with him regularly, especially on things like having a great playoffs and winning a championship. Has he expressed his desire for more feedback when the Habs actually do talk with him and then have that request not followed through on by the team? That would be a legitimate gripe. It seems unlikely that a guy would say something in the media with no foundation to stand on. Having said that, you never like to see a guy being critical of the franchise every time he’s in print. Is he being overlooked because he’s a LD and our coffers are already overflowing with prospects there? We certainly don’t NEED him, but I still would like to see our development team regularly following up with guys we’ve drafted. Does he have an agent that can be a go between him and the team, rather than the media? Is he a troublemaker? I guess we’ll find out more when he’s at development camp this summer.
Correction. He’s a RD. I can’t edit my post for whatever reason.
A trade for Robertson would require a lot of assets..perhaps too much & we still end up with a smaller forward who can score but will find it harder in the playoffs. If we trade off lots of assets, let’s do it first a true younger 2C if that’s possible.
Jason Robertson is 6’3″, you’re probably confusing him with his brother who plays for the Leafs and is 5’9″
