Canadiens Prospects: Fowler And Primeau Goalie Rotation

Several Montreal Canadiens prospects are in the midst of a crucial playoff run in the AHL, playing important roles as the Laval Rocket attempt to capture the Calder Cup.

Forwards such as Joshua Roy, Oliver Kapanen, and Sean Farrell found their rhythm versus the Rochester Americans in the North Division Final, while Adam Engstrom made his way up the prospect ladder thanks to his excellent play on the blue line.

All things considered, it has been a great playoff run from a prospect development standpoint.

Jacob Fowler vs. Cayden Primeau

As Laval prepares to face the Charlotte Checkers in the Eastern Conference Final, the goaltending rotation is set to continue between Jacob Fowler and Cayden Primeau.

First off, we should note that Laval will be playing in back-to-back games to open the series, the type of situation that calls for two talented goaltenders. Beyond the development discussion, which takes on a little less importance in the playoffs, Vincent has been blessed with high-end goaltending depth.

As it stands, Primeau has performed best in the playoffs, as evidenced by his .924 save percentage, which includes his 27-save shutout performance to close out the series versus the Americans. Fowler’s numbers aren’t elite, but they’re encouraging when we consider he made the jump to professional hockey less than two months ago.

More than anything, the AHL playoffs have thrown a little cold water on the Fowler hype train, and if we’re being honest, it’s probably not the worst outcome, as the expectations had risen beyond the realm of reasonable. There will be ample time to find Fowler a heavy dose of starts in the future, and it’s important to remember he’s barely dipped his toes in the icy waters of professional hockey.

Additionally, by maintaining his goaltender rotation, Vincent will ensure that Fowler gains experience in a high-pressure situation, while also honouring the fact that Primeau helped the Rocket establish their best regular-season record in franchise history.

Simply put, Vincent has done a masterful job walking the line, a difficult proposal when we consider the never-ending series of variables that come with coaching in the AHL.

Update: Vincent decided to opt for Cayden Primeau in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final, connoting Jacob Fowler will likely start Game 2.
