Canadiens Draft Pick Order Set For 2025 NHL Entry Draft

Published

montreal canadiens draft

The Montreal Canadiens qualified for the playoffs, and yet, Kent Hughes and Co. still had to pay attention the NHL Draft Lottery.

Usually, only teams that fail to make the playoffs would be involved, but thanks to the most contrived trade in league history, Montreal ended up acquiring the Calgary Flames’ first-round pick in 2025.

ON TOPIC: State Of Conditions Of The Sean Monahan Trade with Calgary

There was a small chance the Habs would end up with the Florida Panthers’ first-round pick. It was a 0.5 percent chance, to be exact, and it involved winning the Draft Lottery. If Calgary had won, the pick would no longer be part of the trade, as it was top-5 protected.

In the end, Calgary did not win, which means the Sean Monahan trade conditions have been met, and the waiting game is finally over. All things considered, it was a very profitable trade that will go down as one of the best-value deals in franchise history. Full marks to Hughes and Jeff Gorton for their masterful approach to the situation.

The New York Islanders ended up winning the 2025 NHL Draft Lottery, quite a boon for a franchise that is currently searching for an identity.

The Habs will have an opportunity to pick back-to-back players in the first round, an interesting situation that could somewhat make up for the discrepancy in pick value compared to recent years.

There’s a chance the team may swing a trade, especially if they hope to find a second-line centre to play with Ivan Demidov, but for the moment, the Canadiens draft picks for the 2025 NHL Draft are as follows:

16th overall (via Calgary)

17th overall

41st overall (via Pittsburgh)

49th overall

79th overall (via Vancouver)

81st overall

82nd overall (via New Jersey)

108th overall (via Detroit)

113th overall

145th overall

177th overall

209th overall

We are overflowing with prospects, so we certainly don’t NEED to draft a bunch more. How about we trade them all for the 2nd pick overall if Misa is available and get an elite 1/2C? I’m being facetious, as there’s a few guys I would like in this draft. However, none would likely have the impact that Misa would have at filling a hole.

I don’t think we need to look for a RD this summer like I read in a lot of places. We have Reinbacher and Mailloux waiting in the wings, so trading for one is a waste in my opinion. I’m not even 100% convinced we need to break the bank for a 2C with Dach still here unless it’s a super skilled elite offensive player. Having said that, if we go after anyone this summer, Bennett would be my guy despite not fitting the super elite criteria I’m looking for. He’s a playoff warrior that I’ve wanted for years.

Jay

I agree wholeheartedly about Bennet. He would be my guy. I disagree about Dach. Unlikely, after his injuries that he will be able to ever assume the C position; I hope he can maintain value as a winger. As for trading up to get Misa. Not a chance that the Habs have the draft capital to pull it off. No team in NHL history has ever traded down from a 2nd like that. I do also think you are wrong about not looking for an RD. The Habs need some more veteran presence and there is no guarantee that Reinbacher AND Mailloux will be ready at the beginning of the season. Having a veteran back up would be good.

Tyrone

That’s why we traded for Carrier last year. He and Matheson are enough in the vet department. The longer we wait with Reinbacher and Mailloux the longer the rebuild takes.

Jay

Sorry I again disagree. Carrier is not enough. He was a fantastic pick up I do agree. He is also small and it would be good to have a larger sized RD to balance the defense. Also the Habs take a big chance if Reinbacher (who is coming off a major injury) and Mailloux (whose defensive reads are not the best) are not ready. The Habs have the resources to get the extra RD and such players always maintain value. Being cautious in this case is prudent and I don’t think that a delay of 6 months to a year hurts either player, both lost a lot of developmental time in one of the hardest positions to develop. I guess we respectfully disagree.

Tyrone

I just don’t want to spend the resources necessary to bring in a top 4 RD when we have 2 kids that could be ready next season or even the one after that. We also have too many LD (Hutson, Matheson, Guhle, Xhekaj and Struble) so somebody has to play their off side, perhaps even 2 guys. With Xhekaj, Struble, Reinbacher and Mailloux (not to mention Engstrom too), I just can’t justify spending resources to bring in yet another Dman. If you include Carrier, we already have 6 NHL D, plus 3 kids on the cusp. That’s potentially 9 Dmen for only 6 or 7 spots. I’d rather spend the resources on a 2C if we’re going to spend them on anything.

Rocks

Could trade a LD for a RD.
Mr. Turnovers for a RD is my suggestion.

Islanders are taking Misa at #1.

When was the last time the 1st pick in an NHL draft was traded? 1998.

Its NOT happening.

Look up the definition of facetious.

Stanley

Guy Carbonneau’s son Justin might be available at 16 or 17. He looks awesome on You Tube highlights

Dave

Put him on a line with Koivu’s son one day. 😃

Stanley

Excellent idea, but please note the following correction:
Justin Carbonneau is the nephew of Guy Carbonneau. Guy Carbonneau’s daughter, Anne-Marie, is married to Brenden Morrow, and they have children together. One of those children is Justin Carbonneau

Rocks

If Anne-Marie and Brenden Morrow had a child his name would be Justin Morrow. Justin Carbonneau’s father is Pascal, not Brenden.

Stanley

I am sorry. When I do a search by Google, Google has been giving me the wrong information. On my third google search I found that he is not related to Guy Carbonneau. Sorry for the confusion.

Rocks

He isn’t Guy Carbonneau’s son. His father’s name is Pascal.

Phil

I thought it was his grandson but it seens to be a distant relative.

The “wish-list” is a true #2 centre and a top Right Dman.

Regarding Logan and David, would have thought by now one of these would have made the team. Not the case. One is injury-plagued and the other is, well, not ready I guess. That top 4 right side D must be filled and we can’t wait for one of these two above to do it because it simply may never happen. Besides, we DON’T want Logan and Hutson on the same line together…bad. So, since ReinB isn’t ready yet, we need a true top RD.

Same for a #2 centre. Dach and whoever else we conjure up simply won’t cut it.

Free agency would be where to go for the #2 centre. There are a few options. Grandlund would be my #1 option, followed by Duschane, then Bennet.

Use the draft capital + additional picks or players to trade for that #1 RD.

Habs make these two moves, and next season will be better than this past one.

Thomas

My suggestion is for the Canadiens to trade for Utah Centre Barrett Hayton. He can score 20 goals or more and has one year remaining on his contract at 2.65M per season. He is quite young at 24 years old.

Are you sure calgary’s pick was top 5 protected and not top 10? If calgary had won the lottery they would be picking 6th. Then it would have been Montreal’s pick. I don’t think so

Tyrone

Agreed. I thought it was top 10 protected too, and had they won either lottery, we would be getting Florida’s pick instead.
