Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, highlights, and stories you may have missed on Monday.

Montreal Canadiens News

Nick Suzuki was named the Third Star of the Week in the NHL thanks to a seven-point haul in just three games. As it stands, Suzuki is on pace for a 26-goal, 46-assist season, which would set yet another career high in points (88).

As per tradition, Suzuki led the charge as the Canadiens struggled to beat the Buffalo Sabres. It wasn’t a pretty win by any means, but it did allow the Habs to string together five consecutive wins for the first time in three years. Suzuki enjoyed a four-point night, Mike Matheson sealed the win in overtime, and Lane Hutson had yet another multipoint effort.  [Habs Highlights: Another Lane Hutson Record, Nick Suzuki Shines]

Speaking of Hutson, he set another record, and it’s even more impressive than the record he broke on Saturday, and the record he broke on Thursday, and the record he broke on Tuesday. The rookie defenceman is the fastest player to reach the 50-point mark in team history, doing so in three fewer games than Chris Chelios. He’s also among the fastest players in league history to do so, putting a fine point on his fantastic scoring pace this season.

Injured forward Kirby Dach was spotted at practice on Monday morning. Now more than ever he will require a strong support system from his teammates and coaches.

Congratulations to papa Gallagher!

In a stark departure from the script in which the Pittsburgh Penguins’ ‘Core Three’ are supposed to stay together until the bitter end, defenceman Kris Letang shrugged off the stress of the trade deadline when speaking to Pittsburgh Hockey Now after the Penguins’ 6-5 overtime loss to Toronto Sunday. Fans of the New Jersey Devils are certainly antsy for change at this point. According to a recent report, a Devils trade is believed to be guaranteed. It’s just a matter of when, not if. [Vegas Golden Knights]

I for one am real happy with this win streak and want the Habs to get into the playoffs! Even if they bow out in the first round, I don’t care. And even if they fall short by a point or two…also, I don’t care.

Either way, it still would show great progress from the past several years.

Of course, all those still in favor of the Tank in order to stockpile yet more picks…this must be driving you nuts. Missing the playoffs by a point or two and getting the 15th spot in the draft is the proverbial “no-man’s land”…but again – I don’t care. Kiss the Tank goodbye…

I want to win. Ask Nick what he prefers…..

I think this team as currently constructed is 4 players away from being one of the top teams in the league. One more top-6 centre, one more top-6 winger, one more top line Dman (right), and one more 2nd line Dman (also right). Now, we already may have three of those four waiting in the wings – Demidov, ReinB and Mailoux, but I guess time will tell on these 3. The Habs need to make getting a real top-6 centre a priority either at the TDL or this next offseason.

Wow! 4 x $2.85M for Evans is a steal! Way to go HuGo!

Perhaps a 2-3yr extension is coming for Armia too?

Here’s a thought, the supposed 2nd rounders that we may have gotten for Evans or Armia, might still be an option if we use our cap space available to be a broker in a trade for a contender getting a big fish at 75% discount (50% from original team + 50% by us)? That’s gotta be worth something. It allows us to have our cake and eat it too. We keep guys to stay in the mix for the playoff race, while still adding assets at the deadline that we can package and move up in the draft to get another impact prospect in the pipeline.
