4 Nations Faceoff Preview And Lines: Team Canada Vs. Team USA

All eyes will be on Team Canada versus Team USA at the 4 Nations Faceoff tournament, with the championship game set for Thursday night in Boston. The puck drop is scheduled for 8 pm ET.
Team Canada’s lineup will be slightly different from the last time these two teams met. The first line will feature Connor McDavid alongside Brayden Point and Mark Stone, while Sam Reinhart will play on the second line with Sidney Crosby and Nathan MacKinnon.
Head coach Jon Cooper is likely to once again turn to Jordan Binnington as his starting goaltender. Binnington has been decent, not great, but at this point, both Adin Hill and Samuel Montembeault are ice-cold, leaving Canada with very few options between the pipes. In a sense, Cooper has painted himself into a corner, as he’s the only coach throughout the tournament that relied on a single goaltender.
But if Canada wants any hope of beating the USA, they’ll have to do more than just rely on a goaltender. They’ll have to do a much better job creating chaos in front of American standout Connor Hellebuyck.
The reigning Vezina Trophy winner has stopped 45 of the 47 shots he’s faced at the 4 Nations Faceoff, to the tune of a sparkling .957 save percentage.
On top of receiving great goaltending from Hellebuyck, the Americans have enjoyed a steady flow of offence from the Tkachuk brothers, not to mention defenceman Zach Werenski, who leads the tournament with five assists in three games.
Canada did manage to outshoot the USA on Saturday, but the fact of the matter is the Americans held the momentum for a healthy portion of the game, and they’ll enter Thursday’s game as the favourites. It remains to be seen if the game will feature three fights in under 10 seconds, as was the case when they met in Montreal, but suffice it to say both teams are motivated to reign supreme in the hockey landscape.
