Montreal Canadiens prospect Ivan Demidov continues to score at an impressive pace in the KHL.

The 19-year-old forward registered yet another multipoint effort on Saturday, including an assist on Alexander Nikishin’s game-winning overtime goal versus Dynamo.

The play included a very nice rush from Demidov, who capitalized on all the open space available at 3v3 to find Nikishin with a great pass. Despite the fact that many have criticized Demidov’s skating, I’d argue he’s far from slow. The big difference between Demidov and most prospects is that he can execute plays at top speed, owing to his unorthodox, yet efficient skating style.

More than anything, we probably have to update how we analyze modern skating styles, but that’s a discussion for another day.

Demidov also had an assist on an earlier goal from Nikishin, which took place while SKA was on the powerplay.

I’m not sure if he intended to find Mikhail Grigorenko with his pass, as it looked like he was simply trying to put the puck in a high-traffic area, but as we all know, you need to be lucky to be good, and you need to be good to be lucky.

Ivan Demidov Historic Scoring Pace

With the two-point effort, Demidov now has 19 goals and 23 assists, which means he is tied for the most productive season in KHL history for an under-20 player. Of course, he’s going to play many more games this year, connoting it will be very difficult for him to emerge from the 2024-25 season without the U-20 record.

Seeing as he receives less ice time than most U-20 players who established historic scoring rates, we decided to level the playing field by evaluating their scoring pace per 60 minutes of ice time, rather than their scoring pace per game.

ON TOPIC: Montreal Canadiens prospect Ivan Demidov Is Enjoying A Historic Scoring Pace

The results were the epitome of encouraging, as Demidov is far and away the most productive U-20 player in KHL history, with a scoring pace that’s hovering around 4 points per 60.

Reports have said they have already offered him 3 seperate contracts and he has turned them all down. I’m pretty sure his plan is the nhl next season.

God bless the kid for wanting to get the hell outta there and standing up for himself. It’s gonna be fun to see what he can accomplish. It’s been a VERY long time since MTL has had this kind of hype around a prospect!

He wants to play in Mtl. Especially after the visit

Morton

Despite reduced ice time Demidov is the 14th leading scorer in the KHL and also has the 5th best plus minus in the KHL plus 22 Surprisingly the leading scorer in the KHL is a 31 year Canadian name Josh Leivo who seems to be a late bloomer. Alex Galchenyuk is the 37th best scorer in the KHL with 36 points in 50 games.

Not bad for someone who threatened to have a cops entire family slaughtered by mob associates.

After 48 games, Demidov’s G/60 and P/60 was 18% more than Kaprizov, the 2nd best all-time U20 player; and it is even more dramatic at even strength, 30% more than Kaprizov. Of the top 4 all-time KHL U20 players, Demidov has the least penalty minutes and the highest goal differential. While this last stat is often looked down upon, it is nevertheless revealing when the player is in the league’s top-5 with +22; it means that he doesn’t cheat to boost his own stats. While we should be cautious with our expectation, the 2024 draft will bolster the Canadiens’ chance to be a contender in a few years.

Somebody please explain to me why the Chicago Blackhawks passed on Demidov in the draft. Chicago desperately needs offense, and Demidov could’ve been Bedards running mate for the next decade plus. Additionally, more and more kids are opting to play defense nowadays than in the past, so it’s not like Chicago couldn’t have picked up an elite defenseman somewhere along the line. On the contrary, players as offensively gifted as Demidov are few and far between. Chicago could’ve had Demidov and still have picked a future number one D-man in this year’s upcoming draft.

I’m neither a Blackhawks nor Canadiens fan, but someone, make it make sense?!?!
