Top prospect Ivan Demidov put on a show on Tuesday, as SKA beat Lokomotiv 5-2. The 19-year-old phenom scored one of his nicest goals of the season, which is saying something because he’s becoming a human highlight-reel.

His goal featured a fantastic drive to the net that left defenders in his dust, not to mention the presence of mind by Demidov to use his left leg to block a last moment desperation stick check.

He also made an excellent pass to assist on Sergei Plotnikov’s game-opening powerplay goal.

With the two-point effort, Demidov now has 16 goals and 21 assists in 45 games, which is even more impressive when you consider he spent a significant portion of the season in the bottom-six, receiving minimal ice time.

Speaking of Russian prospects, Bogdan Konyushkov is still logging a ridiculously impressive amount of ice time for Torpedo.

The Tampa Bay Lightning were the better team on Tuesday night, but veteran netminder Samuel Montembeault put on a show, stopping 33 of the 35 shots sent his way, including 19 (!) high-danger saves.

A late-game push, including goals from Juraj Salfkovsky, Alex Newhook, and Jake Evans rewarded Montembeault for his solid work, and secured yet another impressive comeback win for the Habs. [Habs Highlights: Montembeault Shines In Big Comeback Win]

Cat Toffoli, Julie Petry, and Angela Price discussed the Canadiens’ exciting run to the 2021 Stanley Cup Final.

Patrick Laine was taken aback by the immediate support from Montreal Canadiens fans.

The Penguins are off Tuesday, but their resounding win over the LA Kings Monday did just enough to revive their faint playoff hopes and give them a chance to soldier forward. [Pittsburgh Penguins]

Detroit Red Wings coach Todd McLellan’s approach to playing younger players is evident in the words he chooses to describe his plans for them. [Detroit Red Wings]

The Vegas Golden Knights are in a slump. They’ve dropped four games in a row and have lost six of their last seven. Bruce Cassidy isn’t concerned about the recent string of lost games. He’s frustrated, sure, but not concerned. He knows just as well as anyone that this losing streak isn’t indicative of their play as a whole. [Vegas Golden Knights]

I was very impressed by the flexibility of the goalie pictured above as he was stretching his legs from one side of the net to the other side of the net. But he also left a lot uncovered areas for Demidov to shoot at, which Demidov cleverly took advantage of.

If we are a playoff bubble team today, and that was with an atrocious first 2 months, then how good will we be when we add Demidov?

Most fans don’t realize that we are a top 10 offensive team this season. Adding Ivan’s production next season plus a full season of expected production from Dach and Laine and Newhook and we will likely be top 5ish. And defensively, since early December, we’ve been stellar – outside of the 9 to Pittsburgh and 7 to Toronto, I think we’ve given up 47 in the other 21 games starting Dec 3. No team in the league has that low of a goals against average on the season. I know it’s cherry picked data a bit but the point is we are very capable of keeping the puck out and scoring, and we are winning the 1 goal games- last year we led the league in 1 goal losses. Signs of a metamorphosis

7 weeks is not enough time to project a season but 33 points in our last 23 games is 117 point pace. It’s long enough to be worth noting and being excited about as we haven’t had a stretch this good in how many years?

I’m really enjoying our success right now too, however I expect we’ll take a step back next season defensively when guys like Evans, Armia and even Dvorak are all gone. Our PK has been a big part of our recent resurgence. If all those cagey vets are replaced by rookies from Laval next year, we can’t expect them to perform at the same level as the aforementioned guys. It’ll be back to growing pains again. Maybe we’ll be able to score our way out of trouble most nights? Not a recipe for playoff success, but it’s all a part of the growth curve for our prospects.

I watched that Demidov goal several times. The level of skill involved in passing the puck ahead to himself through his legs, making it impossible for the defender to get at the puck, and then using his left leg to protect the puck ( you can clearly see the defender slashing Demidov’s left leg in a vain attempt to stop the play) is hockey at a truly elite NHL level. I would venture to say that the last time we saw such elite hockey was from the great Pavel Datsyuk. The kid just turned 19 and he’s making plays like this in the second best league in the world? Oh my.

What do you think is a realistic projection for his rookie season?
