Additional NHL Waivers Information And Rules

Players must remain on waivers for 24 hours prior to being re-assigned to the American Hockey League (AHL) or agreeing to a mutual contract termination.

The NHL’s waiver period begins 12 days before the season begins, and it lasts until the final game of the year.

For now, the NHL’s waiver priority list is decided by the final standings of the 2023-24 season. For example, the Montreal Canadiens finished fifth-last in the NHL standings last season, which means they will have the fifth best waiver-wire priority position for the time being. The San Jose Sharks finished dead last, which means they have first pick on the players who end up on being placed on waivers.

The position of NHL teams on the list will not change until later in the season, with November 1 being the official cutoff. At that point, the waiver-wire priority list will be based on the updated NHL standings.

If a team claims a player between now and November 1, they will not lose their waiver-wire priority. They can claim as many players as they like while maintaining the same position on the priority list. However, after November 1, a claim will result in teams dropping to the lowest waiver-claim priority.
