Habs Wrap: Rookie Camp List, Prospect Teams, Demidov
MONTREAL — There’s always Montreal Canadiens content to absorb, but there are only so many hours in a day. On Sundays, we recap the most exciting and relevant NHL news stories that you may have missed throughout the week so that you can stay in the Canadiens loop.
Monday
Sniper Cole Caufield has announced he will wear No.13 in the upcoming season to honour fellow American Johnny Gaudreau. Caufield is one of the many players who drew inspiration from Gaudreau during their ascension to the NHL.
Is Carey Price worthy of the Hockey Hall of Fame? Should the Montreal Canadiens retire his number? There’s a strong case to be made that both honours are in order, however the bar has been set at an unreasonable level in Montreal due to the dynasty teams of yesteryear. [Carey Price, The Canadiens, And The Hockey Hall Of Fame Discussion]
David Reinbacher is one of the rookies who will have a legitimate chance to earn a roster spot at training camp, but to do so he’ll have to hit the ground running. Fortunately, he seems to have found a new gear since leaving EHC Kloten.
After watching every games he played with Austria last week, I am confident that Reinbacher could end up being a top line D in his prime
If you want to see every defensive, offensive, transition play that he did during the Olympic qualifier. I did a nice video on it

The newest member of the Habs, Patrik Laine, hit the ice for the first time on Tuesday. As a reminder, Laine hasn’t played in an NHL game since 2023, which means it’ll likely take him some time to get up to speed with his new teammates.

Defencemen Lane Hutson and Logan Mailloux were among the players taking part in the NHL’s rookie showcase. With all due respect to 22-year-old forward Matt Rempe, who earned a goal and an assist in 17 games last year, I’m not sure if he’s on the same level as the rest of the players that featured in the showcase, but he does bring a certain level of entertainment to the mix. Both Hutson and Mailloux will be aiming to earn a job with the Montreal Canadiens once camp opens. [Canadiens Depth Chart: Trades Improve Defensive Prospect Odds]

There’s something a little too visually aggressive about the orange being used by the Anaheim Ducks. I’d argue it stands out for the wrong reasons, like an orange construction cone that fell into the river and wasn’t cleaned off before it was put back into use.

Patrik Laine will have gone 300 days without playing an NHL game by the time the season starts. Patience and support is in order, both when it comes to his play and his mental health situation, as the latter is more important in the long run. Tyler Thorpe, who stood out at the Canadiens development camp in July, is banking on another good season with the Vancouver Giants in the WHL.

Friday
Despite not receiving much ice time, top prospect Ivan Demidov earned one assist in his KHL debut with SKA Saint Petersburg. Here are some of the highlights from his professional hockey debut.

The Canadiens announced the 23-man roster that will be attending the team’s rookie camp, and it must be said that it’s one of the strongest lineups the team has produced in years, as it includes Owen Beck, Lane Hutson, Logan Mailloux, David Reinbacher, and Adam Engstrom.[Canadiens Rookie Camp List Overflowing With Talented Prospects]

The Habs have long wanted to play a game in Paris, France, but the international event has been put on the back burner for the time being. [Radio Canada (FR)]
Prospect Filip Eriksson scored a nice goal for Växjö in their opening game of their Champions League campaign. Eriksson was drafted in the sixth round, 165th overall (2024).
