Habs Daily: Hutson & Mailloux Showcase, Patience For Laine
Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, highlights, and stories you may have missed on Wednesday.
Montreal Canadiens News
Defencemen Lane Hutson and Logan Mailloux were among the players taking part in the NHL’s rookie showcase. With all due respect to 22-year-old forward Matt Rempe, who earned a goal and an assist in 17 games last year, I’m not sure if he’s on the same level as the rest of the players that featured in the showcase, but he does bring a certain level of entertainment to the mix. Both Hutson and Mailloux will be aiming to earn a job with the Montreal Canadiens once camp opens. [Canadiens Depth Chart: Trades Improve Defensive Prospect Odds]

As an aside, I love when teams use colours that break from the traditional colour pallet in the NHL, but there’s something a little too visually aggressive about the orange being used by the Anaheim Ducks. I’d argue it stands out for the wrong reasons, like an orange construction cone that fell into the river and wasn’t cleaned off before it was put back into use.

Patrik Laine will have gone 300 days without playing an NHL game by the time the season starts. Patience and support is in order, both when it comes to his play and his mental health situation, as the latter is more important in the long run. Tyler Thorpe, who stood out at the Canadiens development camp in July, is banking on another good season with the Vancouver Giants in the WHL.

Like golden bookends, it will be with no small irony the Pittsburgh Penguins will begin their 2024-25 season in the very same outposts where their 2023-24 season collapsed. The trips might not only put this season in the balance but the direction of the organization, too. [Pittsburgh Penguins]
The Philadelphia Flyers may have found this season’s Ryan Poehling in the form of one of their latest signings, Latvian centre Rodrigo Abols. After a four-season hiatus away from the North American ranks, Abols, 28, returns with a legitimate chance to make the Flyers’ 2024-25 roster and, perhaps, his NHL debut, too. [Philadelphia Flyers]
The 2024-25 Washington Capitals season is almost here. The organization announced important schedule information regarding their rookie camp and their first day of training camp. [Washington Capitals]
