Here are the Montreal Canadiens news items, highlights, and stories you may have missed on Wednesday.

Montreal Canadiens News

Scott Wheeler over at The Athletic listed his top 20 NHL goalie prospects, with Montreal Canadiens netminder Jacob Fowler listed as the third-best goaltender among all eligible players. This comes on the heels of his top 100 prospect list, which had Ivan Demidov listed as the third-best skater. Ladies and gentlemen, we have officially entered a new era of Montreal Canadiens prospects, one that features top players at every position. We had the audacity to list Fowler as the top prospect one at least one occasion last year in our most popular feature, the Canadiens Prospect Power Rankings.  [Canadiens Prospect Power Rankings: Fowler Reigns Supreme]

In the spirit of debunking a completely false rumour, we decided to look into the recent ‘report’ that suggested Filip Mesar was unhappy with his situation, that he had openly revolted against the team by refusing to attend development camp, and that the Canadiens sent the Winnipeg Jets a tremendous trade offer for Rutger McGroarty that included Mesar as well as a first-round pick and either Jordan Harris or Justin Barron. We also detailed how the rumour gained traction after it was initially ignored. Suffice to say, the report was an absolute fabrication, but it’s still important to note that Mesar will have a lot to prove once he arrives in Montreal in the first two weeks of August. Always more Ivan Demidov highlight videos! This time around we have an excellent edit that was made by Gregory Hamel. I know it’s supposed to be a Demidov highlight, but honestly, the first thing that came to mind when I saw the video was that Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki is incredibly underrated.

  • Steve Konowalchuk only played 110 games for the Colorado Avalanche, but quickly became a fan favourite because of the way he played the game. The NHL veteran spent a bit of time behind Colorado’s bench a decade ago, but most recently returned to be the Associate Head Coach for the Colorado Eagles last season. That is no longer the case, as he was hired by the Springfield Falcons to be their Head Coach after the season ended. [Colorado Avalanche]
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins are in a state of transition but have only laid the groundwork to get from here to there, that mysterious era beyond the core led by Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang. In fact, last summer, the Penguins added to the core with Erik Karlsson, but it wasn’t enough to reverse the playoff slide. Conversely, the rival Washington Capitals have done a lot of things differently.[Pittsburgh Penguins]
