Montreal Canadiens training camp

The Montreal Canadiens welcomed several of their top prospects as their 2023 development camp got underway at their training facility in Brossard.

37 prospects are participating, including 27 players that were drafted by the Canadiens. You can click here to see the full 2023 Montreal Canadiens Development Camp roster. Sunday marked the first day that the prospects took to the ice, participating in a practice that is open to all members of the public who are interested in watching.

The development camp runs until July 4, allowing prospects to familiarize themselves with what to eventually expect once they make their way to the NHL, and giving development coaches a chance to gauge their progress compared to the last time the aforementioned prospects were evaluated.

It also means we’re given an updated list of prospect weight and height.

Size Update

This year, exciting defensive prospect Lane Hutson showed up to camp measuring 5’09” and 158 lbs, which is an inch taller and seven pounds lighter than the last time Hutson attended development camp. Cerebral forward Owen Beck did not gain any weight, but he is listed as 6’0″ rather than 5’11”. On the flip side, Logan Mailloux lost some weight and is now listed at 210 lbs rather than 216 lbs.

As for newcomers, 5th overall pick David Reinbacher is listed at 6’2″ and 194 lbs, whereas goaltender Jacob Fowler, who has struggled with conditioning in the past, tipped the scales at 6’01” and 223 lbs.

For those wondering where 2022 first-overall pick Juraj Slafkosvky happens to be, he is currently in Czechia working with a strength and conditioning coach, which is an encouraging development given that he was pushed off the puck a little too easily last season.

Good to get a definitive measurement on Fowler since there were so many conflicting reports out there. I hope he’s still going to grow.

Why does he need to grow? Your answer ought to be good for a laugh.
