Former Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin’s name is coming up more these days.

The former Canadiens executive, who has been working for the L.A. Kings as senior advisor to GM Rob Blake, could be in the running for a few general manager positions across the league.

After it was initially reported that Bergevin was one of the potential candidates in the running for vacant general manager position with the Pittsburgh Penguins, there appears to be another team of interest.

The Calgary Flames, who mutually agreed to part ways with general manager Brad Treliving, are actively looking to get a general manager in place to help restructure their club and help bring them in a new direction.

According to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman, the former Montreal Canadiens general manager is one of the first people on their list for the position.

There may be more general manager vacancies that open up over the next few weeks that could further shake up the field, as all eyes are on Toronto to see what the Maple Leafs decide to do with Kyle Dubas.

As of this instance, the two major vacancies remain in Calgary and Pittsburgh, and both seem intent on talking to Marc Bergevin to see if he’d be a fit to help turn their respective franchise around.

With the Montreal Canadiens, Bergevin had significant playoff success; reaching the Conference Finals on two occasions and the Stanley Cup Finals in 2021.

Having experience retooling on the fly, Bergevin could be the type of hybrid executive, possessing old-school aptitudes with a modern approach, that could help a team restructure for the better.

As of this moment, all talks seem to be preliminary, but it could quickly pick up steam, as both clubs will likely want their general managers in place well before the important 2023 NHL Draft.
