Montreal Canadiens trade

The Montreal Canadiens announced they have traded AHL forward Nate Schnarr to the Los Angeles Kings their first deal on Trade Deadline day.

In exchange, the Canadiens will receive defenceman Frédéric Allard from the Kings.

Schnarr, 24, is a centre who was acquired at the last deadline from the New Jersey Devils in exchange for goaltender Andrew Hammond. Hammond has since retired from the NHL.

He spent his entire tenure with the Canadiens playing for their AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket.

In 47 games with the Rocket, Schnarr has scored seven goals and 10 assists, including three goals and four assists in 27 games this season.

He was a useful player for the Canadiens’ farm team, but injuries have hampered his progression, and his position on the team’s depth chart consequently dropped significantly.

Schnarr was 23rd in scoring for the Rocket at the time of the trade.

Allard, 25, was chosen in the third round (78th overall) by the Nashville Predators at the 2016 Entry Draft.

He’s only played one NHL game, back in 2020-21, and has spent the majority of his career in the AHL, with a brief stop in the ECHL following his rookie season with the Milwaukee Admirals.

Allard has scored two goals and five assists in 35 games for the Ontario Reign this season, pushing his career totals to 23 goals and 91 assists in 292 AHL games.

The Canadiens announced Allard will report directly to the Laval Rocket, as to provide some depth and added insurance for the upcoming playoff run.

Allard was originally billed as an offensive defenceman, due to his excellent production in the QMJHL, and has continued to provide offence at a relatively healthy rate since joining the AHL.

He is currently signed to an expiring deal which pays him $750,000 per season. He will be a restricted-free agent at the conclusion of his current contract.
