Canadiens Trade Buzz: Dubois Coming Home?

NHL Trade

The Montreal Canadiens were once again the subject of numerous NHL trade rumours on Tuesday and once again the Canadiens were being linked to Ste-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec native Pierre-Luc Dubois.

Radio-Canada columnist and analyst Martin Leclerc dropped a bomb on Twitter Thursday afternoon when he tweeted that the Montreal Canadiens almost acquired the Winnipeg Jets restricted free agent centre on the NHL Draft floor at the Bell Centre last week. According to Leclerc, the two teams are still in NHL trade discussions on the third overall pick from the 2016 NHL Draft.

“I’m being told that the Canadiens are still working with the Jets on a trade that would bring Dubois to Montreal for the long-term,” Leclerc tweeted. “The talks almost materialized in a trade at the draft last week.”

It should be noted that, following this report by Leclerc, a well-placed source told Montreal Hockey Now that Canadiens executive vice president Jeff Gorton, general manager Kent Hughes and their hockey operations staff were ‘locked in their room’ for a solid portion of Canadiens development camp in Brossard on Tuesday.

Also, prior Leclerc’s report, TVA Sports NHL Insider Renaud Lavoie reported that the Canadiens were very active in NHL trade talks and that a trade could be coming before NHL Free Agency begins on Wednesday at Noon ET.

After being the subject of trade rumours heading into the March 21 2002 NHL Trade Deadline but not getting dealt, Pierre-Luc Dubois, a restricted free agent, became a hot name on the NHL trade market again late last month when he made it clear that even if reaches a new deal with the Jets, he still wants to test the UFA market when he’s able. That’s when the latest report linking the Canadiens to Dubois, 24, came via Ken Wiebe of Sportsnet set social media and Canadiens chat rooms on fire with NHL trade rumours. In a piece that was more focused on the New York Rangers being a dance partner on the NHL trade market, Wiebe mentioned the Montreal Canadiens suggesting that the Jets could spur on a bidding war between the Rangers and the Canadiens:

‘This isn’t to suggest a deal for Dubois is imminent, but with the Montreal Canadiens also having interest in the power forward, this could be as simple as trying to drum up a bidding war – since the Jets’ primary objective is to get a one-year contract done and then get to work on convincing the Montreal product to reconsider his long-range thinking and eventually sign on the dotted line and take his place as a foundational piece.’

This is a developing story and MHN will keep you posted. …
