Juraj Slafkovsky was at a loss for words when his childhood friend, Filip Mesar, was chosen at 26th overall by the Montreal Canadiens.

On top of all the emotions he must have been feeling after being selected at 1st overall, as well as his first interaction with Canadiens fans, he got to see his childhood friend experience the same thing. Filip Mesar and Juraj Slafkovsky go way back and have played together internationally for years now., and wowed the hockey world together last summer at the Hlinka-Gretzky tournament for Slovakia.

When he heard Mesar’s name called out by the Montreal Canadiens, Slafkovsky was at a loss for words and looked in such disbelief that the Canadiens doubled up on their haul of Slovak forwards. Slafkosvky made his best impression of the famous “What!?” reaction from the Kotkaniemi selection at the 2018 NHL Draft as he sat there in shock with his hands on his head. See the live reaction below:

After being drafted, Mesar, Slafkosvky and Simon Nemec all embraced just outside the media room in a tender moment. It was a triumphant moment for them and their country,

Immediately after, Mesar walked up to the Canadiens’ press podium to speak to the media. Mesar spoke about his relationship with Juraj Slafkosvky, pointing out that they had played together for years, but had also even gone on vacation together this past year.

“We’ve known each other since we were kids. He’s an unbelievable guy,” said Mesar of his friend and fellow countryman.

The two friends get to continue their professional careers together under the banner of the Montreal Canadiens in the very near future. Canadiens fans will hope that they can bring their international success for Slovakia to the Canadiens down the line, as they look to make their mark in the NHL in the coming years.
